Product Description

What Is the IC693CMM311N?

The IC693CMM311N is a dual-serial communications coprocessor for the GE Series 90-30 platform. It installs in a single backplane slot and runs an Intel 80C186-based coprocessor, so serial traffic is handled independently of the main CPU scan. Consequently, two asynchronous links can run concurrently without loading the controller's logic execution.

Port 1 provides RS-232 signaling. Port 2 supports RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485, which allows one module to serve both a local programming terminal and a multidrop field network. This N revision carries the same architecture as earlier releases, and current ownership sits with Emerson following the GE Fanuc lineage.

IC693CMM311N Serial Ports and Protocol Support

Protocol coverage determines how easily the module fits an existing control architecture. The IC693CMM311N speaks CCM, Modbus RTU, SNP, and SNP-X, covering both peer-to-peer and master-slave topologies. Baud rates span 300 to 19200 bps, so legacy instruments and slower telemetry devices remain addressable.

  • Serial ports: 2 independent; Port 1 RS-232, Port 2 RS-232/RS-422/RS-485
  • Protocols: CCM, Modbus RTU, SNP, SNP-X
  • Baud rate: 300 to 19200 bps
  • Backplane current: 400 mA at 5 VDC
  • Processor: Intel 80C186-based coprocessor
  • Operating temperature: 0 to 60 °C
  • Storage temperature: -40 to +85 °C
  • Humidity: 5 to 95% non-condensing
  • Protection rating: IP20
  • Weight: ~0.53 kg (supplier-reported)

Refer to the official datasheet for module dimensions; supplier data lists packaging size only.

Applying the IC693CMM311N in Service

Engineers typically deploy this module where a Series 90-30 rack must exchange data with drives, weigh scales, or intelligent relays over Modbus RTU. Because Port 2 supports RS-485, several nodes can share one twisted-pair segment, which reduces cabling runs across a panel. In retrofit work, the RS-232 port often serves a maintenance laptop while the second port stays dedicated to production traffic.

Integration and Installation Notes

Confirm backplane current headroom before adding the module. At 400 mA from the 5 VDC rail, the rack power budget must absorb this load alongside existing I/O. Keep the enclosure at IP20 cleanliness, since the module relies on cabinet-level protection. For serial runs, verify cable shielding and termination against the target protocol. Wiring into plant networks may require an external gateway or connection module; confirm cables and gateways with the supplier before commissioning.

Lifecycle and Sourcing

This part appears as legacy or obsolete in aftermarket listings, and an official Emerson end-of-service date is not verified. This part belongs to a discontinued platform (GE Series 90-30), superseded by PACSystems RX3i (IC695 series). We stock remaining new and refurbished units.
