Product Description

Product Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OAP12 is a discrete AC output module from the SLC500 series by Rockwell Automation. It provides twelve (12) AC output channels with six (6) points per common terminal, each common equipped with an electronic fuse. This design allows one group of outputs to continue operating even if the fuse on the other group is blown. The module includes a modifiable jumper for fuse monitoring: setting the jumper to short pins 2 and 3 enables monitoring, while the default setting (pins 2 and 1) disables it.

Continuous Current per Point 2.0 A @ 30 °C (86 °F), 1.25 A @ 55 °C (131 °F), 1.0 A @ 60 °C (140 °F)
Continuous Current per Module, Max 9.0 A @ 30 °C (86 °F), 6.8 A @ 55 °C (131 °F), 6.0 A @ 60 °C (140 °F)

Industry Applications

This module is well-suited for controlling AC loads such as motor starters, solenoids, and indicator lights in manufacturing lines. For example, in a packaging facility, the 1746-OAP12 can switch multiple conveyor motors on and off with its 12 outputs, leveraging the 2A per point capacity at 30°C. The electronic fusing per common group adds reliability: if one group's fuse blows, the other group continues operating, minimizing downtime. Compared to similar modules with lower current ratings, this unit offers higher per-point and per-module current, making it a cost-effective choice for high-current AC applications.

Installation & Setup Guidance

Mount the 1746-OAP12 in any slot of a 1746 chassis using its Removable Terminal Block (RTB). Ensure the operating voltage range (85-264 VAC) matches your supply. For fuse monitoring, set the jumper to short pins 2 and 3; to disable, set it to pins 2 and 1. When used with SLC5/02 and later processors, note that programming a fault routine cannot clear the major fault bit (S:1/13, with fault code in S:6). Always verify compatibility with your SLC500 processor before installation.

Maintenance & Reliability

Inspect the module periodically for signs of overheating or blown fuses. The operating temperature range is 0 to 60 °C (32 to 140 °F) with 5-95% relative humidity (non-condensing). The module withstands operational shock of 30G and vibration of 5G at 10-500 Hz. If a fuse blows, replace it with a SAN-O HQ 6.3A fuse (UL/CSA rated) or use replacement fuse kit 1746-F9 (five fuses per kit).

Compatibility & Integration

The 1746-OAP12 is compatible with all SLC500 processors. It integrates via the backplane, drawing 0.370 A at 5.1 Volts (backplane current). No additional communication protocols are required for basic operation.

Selection Guide & Purchasing Advice

When selecting an output module, consider the number of outputs, voltage range, and current requirements. The 1746-OAP12 offers 12 outputs with 120/240VAC and high per-point current. For replacement or new installations, AutoDCSTech stocks this module and can advise on lifecycle status and availability.

Troubleshooting & Common Issues

If outputs fail to energize, check the electronic fuse status via the monitoring jumper. A blown fuse will set the major fault bit (S:1/13). Verify the supply voltage is within 85-264 VAC. If the module does not respond, inspect the backplane connection and ensure the processor is in run mode. For persistent issues, consult the SLC500 system manual.
