Product Description

Compact Safety Control for High-Reliability Applications

The Allen-Bradley 1768-L45S is a Compact GuardLogix controller designed for applications requiring integrated safety up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) and Performance Level e (PL e). This module combines standard CompactLogix automation capabilities with a 1oo2 safety architecture, making it suitable for machinery and processes where both productivity and personnel protection are critical.

Industry Applications

The 1oo2 architecture provides redundancy for critical safety functions, reducing the risk of undetected failures. In a typical bottling line, for example, the 1768-L45S can manage both standard machine control and safety interlocks, eliminating the need for separate safety controllers.

Installation & Setup Guidance

Mount the 1768-L45S on a DIN rail or panel using the provided mounting slots. Maintain clearances of 105 mm (4.13 in.) at the top and bottom and 90 mm (3.54 in.) on the sides for adequate airflow. The controller operates at 0–60 °C ambient temperature. Use a 1784-CF128 CompactFlash card for memory backup. Connect the embedded RS-232 port for initial configuration. Ensure the 24 V DC backplane supply can deliver at least 2.1 A.

Maintenance & Reliability

Periodically inspect the enclosure for dust accumulation and verify that ambient temperature stays within the 0–60 °C range. The open enclosure design requires a clean, dry environment. Check that the backplane current draw does not exceed 2.1 A. No internal user-serviceable parts exist; contact AutoDCSTech for replacement if faults occur.

Compatibility & Integration

The 1768-L45S supports up to two 1768 communication modules for Ethernet/IP (standard and safety), ControlNet (standard and safety), or DeviceNet. It can control up to 30 1769 Compact I/O modules across three expansion banks, plus four local 1768 I/O modules. Standard programming uses IEC 61131-3 languages; safety tasks use relay ladder logic with safety instructions.

Selection Guide & Purchasing Advice

When selecting a safety controller, consider the required SIL/PL level, I/O count, and communication needs. The 1768-L45S fits applications needing up to SIL 3/PL e with moderate I/O expansion. Please verify current lifecycle status and availability with AutoDCSTech before ordering.
