Product Description

1747-L553: An SLC 5/05 Processor with 12K User Memory

The 1747-L553 is an Allen-Bradley SLC 5/05 processor, and the L in the model number is the meaningful part: it identifies the variant with roughly 12K of user memory rather than the 4K of the base SLC 5/05. On a machine that grew after installation, memory capacity is the constraint that decides whether the existing programme can be extended or whether the processor has to be replaced with a different family.

That decision point is where this part usually comes up. When a programme outgrows its processor, the question is whether the new logic fits in more memory or needs capabilities the SLC 5/05 does not have. The first is a processor swap; the second is a platform migration, and conflating them leads to buying a bigger processor that still cannot run the programme.

SLC 5/05 and SLC 5 Family Processors

Within the SLC 5 family, processors differ in memory capacity and instruction set. The capacity determines how much programme fits; the instruction set determines what the programme can do:

1747 Part Number Processor / Module Function
1747-L532 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L533 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L541 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L542 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L543 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L551 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application
1747-L552 SLC 500 family module — confirm processor memory and instruction set against the application

Memory Sizing Before Ordering

Add up the memory the existing programme uses, plus the memory the new logic will use, plus the headroom the application needs for future changes. A programme that fits exactly is a programme that cannot be changed — and on a machine that is still being modified, that is the constraint that recurs.

Confirm the memory requirement against the actual rung and data-block usage in the existing programme rather than the original specification. Programmes tend to grow beyond their design allowance, and the specification sheet value for the installed processor is often lower than what the programme actually consumes.

Memory vs Capability: Know Which One You Need

If the new logic needs structured math, indexed addressing or motion features the SLC 5/05 does not provide, more memory on the same processor will not help. Those requirements point to a different processor family, which is a larger change: different programming software, different I/O system and a migration rather than a swap.

Data Migration and Downtime Planning

Replacing a processor means the programme has to be transferred to the replacement and verified before the machine runs again. On a machine where the controller is the only record of the logic — which is common on older SLC installations — the transfer is the point of no return and should be verified against the machine behaviour, not just against a successful upload.
