1747-SN: The Remote I/O Scanner Linking SLC 500 to a RIO Network
The 1747-SN is the Remote I/O scanner for the SLC 500 platform, and its function is specific: it bridges between the SLC 500 processor and a Remote I/O network, letting remote I/O modules be located physically close to the field devices rather than back in the controller cabinet.
That distance reduction is the whole point. On a machine with actuators and sensors spread across a long line, running field wiring back to a central cabinet means long cable runs vulnerable to interference. A remote scanner puts the I/O near the devices and reduces those runs to a network cable.
Backplane current is 600 mA at 5 V and 90 mA at 24 V, weight 1 lb (0.45 kg), operating temperature 0 to 60 °C, with UL / C-UL, CE and C-Tick agency certification.

Where a Scanner Pays for Itself
The scanner justifies itself on cable length and installation cost. A remote I/O network carries the modules over a single network cable, so field wiring becomes short local wiring at each station. On a retrofit where the existing field wiring already reaches a central cabinet, that saving does not apply — and the scanner is simply an extra module.
Protocol Compatibility Is the Deciding Factor
A scanner is only useful if the remote modules on the network are the type that scanner supports. Confirming the remote I/O module family against the scanner before ordering is what prevents a network that assembles correctly but will not communicate.
