IC200MDL640: 16 DC Inputs with Group Isolation and No External Power Supply

The IC200MDL640 handles the most common discrete signal class in the plant: 24 VDC field devices. Sixteen inputs in 2 groups, 0-30 VDC input voltage (24 VDC nominal), 10K ohms input impedance, and every point readable from a dedicated LED plus one OK LED. Because the backplane supplies everything the module needs, it draws 25 mA at 5 V and requires no external power supply — which makes it the simplest possible population for a spare VersaMax slot during a retrofit.

The module ID is FFFF8008, which is the value to enter when configuring the module in the VersaMax programming software. Having thatnumber correct before commissioning saves a module-not-found fault that otherwise looks like a backplane problem.

Group-to-group isolation is 250 VAC continuous and 1500 VAC for 1 minute. There is no point-to-point isolation within a group, so all devices on a group must share a common reference.

Positive and Negative Logic Configuration

The IC200MDL640 supports both positive and negative logic, which is what allows it to read sinking devices and sourcing devices on the same module. When a machine mixes device types, the logic convention has to be configured per point in the VersaMax programming software — a module wired for positive logic will read every negative-logic device as permanently off, which looks like a wiring fault but is a configuration mismatch.

Field Wiring and Shorting Bar Technique

Install the module into any VersaMax backplane slot that supplies 5 V at 25 mA — the backplane provides all necessary power, so no external supply connection is required. During field wiring, use a shorting bar with the B terminal to accelerate commissioning: it allows a group of inputs to be brought up and verified together before individual device wiring is landed.

10K ohms input impedance means the module presents minimal loading on the field device loop, which matters when a single 24 VDC supply feeds many inputs through long field runs.

Why No External Power Supply Simplifies Retrofits

Modules that require an external supply need a second field wiring campaign: a new wire run, a new fuse, and a new entry in the electrical drawing for every machine touched. Because the IC200MDL640 takes all its power from the backplane, retrofitting one into an existing VersaMax rack means one card insertion and terminal wiring only. This is the single most common reason integrators standardise on this module family for machine upgrades.
