Product Description

3501T Digital Input Module Overview

When process safety demands absolute reliability, the 3501T from Triconex delivers a triple modular redundant (TMR) digital input solution. This module is engineered for high-integrity applications where a single point of failure is unacceptable. With 32 non-commoned, isolated input points, the 3501T ensures each field signal is independently conditioned and monitored.

The 3501T accepts both AC and DC field voltages, operating across a range of 90-155 VAC/VDC. Its frequency range of DC or 47-63 Hz makes it versatile for various industrial power systems. The module provides optical isolation between the field and the Tricon controller, protecting sensitive electronics from transients and ground loops.

Key Features and Technical Specifications

Built on Triconex's proven TMR architecture, the 3501T contains three isolated input channels that independently process all data. Each channel scans every input point, compiles the data, and transmits it to the main processors on demand. The main processors then vote the input data just before processing, ensuring the highest integrity. All critical signal paths are 100% triplicated for guaranteed safety and maximum availability.

  • Input Points: 32, non-commoned, isolated
  • Voltage Range: 90-155 VAC/VDC
  • Frequency: DC or 47-63 Hz
  • OFF to ON Threshold: > 86 VAC/VDC
  • ON to OFF Threshold: < 28 VAC/VDC
  • Nominal Turn-On Current: 6-9 mA
  • Typical Hysteresis: 32 VAC/VDC
  • Input Delay (OFF to ON): < 8 ms
  • Input Delay (ON to OFF): < 15 ms
  • Point Isolation: 1500 VDC / 2500 VDC
  • Nominal Input Impedance: > 8.5 KΩ
  • Field Power Load per ON Point: 1.5 watts (nominal), 2.9 watts @ max field voltage

One distinctive feature of the 3501T is its per-point isolation rating of 1500 VDC (and 2500 VDC for certain configurations). This provides exceptional protection against voltage spikes and ensures that a fault on one input does not affect others—a critical advantage in harsh industrial environments.

Applications and Use Cases

The 3501T is ideal for safety-critical applications in oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and other industries where high availability is essential. Its TMR design makes it suitable for emergency shutdown systems, fire and gas detection, and burner management. The module's ability to handle both AC and DC signals simplifies integration into existing plants.

For example, in a refinery, the 3501T can monitor limit switches and pressure transducers in a safety instrumented function, providing reliable input data to the logic solver. Its fast response times (less than 8 ms OFF-to-ON) ensure rapid detection of abnormal conditions.

Installation and Setup

Mounting the 3501T is straightforward. The module connects to termination panels via fanned-out cables (part number 9101-010). For non-commoned configurations, use the 9561-110 termination panel; for commoned applications, the 9561-810 is available. Basic termination panels (9551-110) are also supported. The module's red color code aids in quick identification during installation.

When wiring field inputs, ensure that the voltage stays within the specified range of 90-155 VAC/VDC. Observe the polarity for DC inputs. The module's optical isolation eliminates the need for additional isolation barriers, simplifying the wiring layout.

Maintenance and Reliability

Routine maintenance of the 3501T is minimal, thanks to its self-diagnostic capabilities. The module continuously runs diagnostics on each channel. If a fault is detected, the module Fault indicator activates, and the chassis alarm signal is triggered. The Fault indicator points to a channel fault, not a module failure, allowing for targeted troubleshooting.

Regularly inspect the module's status indicators: PASS, FAULT, and ACTIVE. Ensure that the field wiring is secure and that the module is kept clean and free from excessive dust. Follow the manufacturer's manual for any detailed maintenance procedures.

Compatibility and Integration

The 3501T is designed for use with the Tricon controller platform. It communicates with the main processors via the Tricon backplane. The module is compatible with Tricon systems that support TMR digital input modules. For integration, refer to the Tricon system documentation to ensure proper configuration.

Troubleshooting and Common Issues

If the FAULT indicator illuminates, check the diagnostic status of each channel. A channel fault may indicate a field wiring issue, such as a short or open circuit. Verify that the input voltage is within the specified range. If the module fails to turn on, check the OFF-to-ON threshold (must exceed 86 VAC/VDC). If it fails to turn off, ensure the voltage drops below 28 VAC/VDC.

For persistent issues, consult the Triconex manual or contact AutoDCSTech for technical support.
